Protected designation of origin (until 2002 Kraski Teran) for a well-known PTP red wine from the Slovenian wine region of Kras(Primorska). It may only be used for wines grown on a defined area of 750 hectares with the special soil type Terra Rossa with the Slovenian designation Teran. Kras Teran is pressed from the Refošk(Terrano) variety. According to one hypothesis, it is supposed to be the ancient wine Pucinum mentioned by Pliny the Elder (23-79). The colourful, tannin-rich red wine is said to have health-promoting properties. It was formerly sold in pharmacies as a "medicine". Well-known producers are Cotar, Lisjak and Rencel. Outside the Teran area in Primorska the wine is called Refošk. The Teran area stretches across the border into the Italian Friuli, where the equivalent "Terrano" is produced by a smaller area in the Carso DOC area.
