The red grape variety comes from Russia. Synonyms are Koumchatzky Noir, Koumshatsky Cherny, Koumchatzky Tcheurny and Kumshatskii Cherny. The parentage (parenthood) is unknown. The variety named after a city is grown in the southern part of Rostov near the border to Ukraine. It is mainly used there for sweet sparkling wines. In 2016, no stock was recorded (Kym Anderson). There is also a white variety called Kumshatsky Bely.
