This small appellation is located in the centre of the French Jura wine region south of its even more "famous brother" Château-Chalon. The vineyards cover 73 hectares of vineyards in the eponymous and two other communes. The name (Etoile = star) is derived from the abundant fossil parts in the marl soil there. These are the stems of flower-shaped sea lilies in the shape of five-armed stars. The white wine is blended from the varieties Chardonnay, Poulsard and Savagnin. The AC L'Etoile Mousseux applies to bottle-fermented sparkling wine and the AC L'Etoile Vin de Paille to sweet Vin de paille (straw wine) from the same varieties. The AC L'Etoile Vin Jaune applies to a Vin Jaune made from the Savagnin variety. Well known producers are Château l'Etoile, Domaine Michel Geneletti, Jean Gros and Domaine de Montbourgeau.
