The community in the area Côte de Nuits in the Burgundy was named "Vaoa" at the beginning of the 7th century. From the 9th century it belonged to the monastery Prieuré Saint-Vivant of the Order of Benedictine, In 1232, the monks were given vineyards. In 1651, the location "Le Cloux" was renamed "La Romanée" because of the discovery of Roman ruins nearby. This small location of less than one hectare then became one of the most famous Burgundian vineyards. The name of the best location was added as in many Burgundian communities in 1866 to the municipality name.
