The community in the area Côte de Nuits in the Burgundy has an ancient winegrowing history. It was called "Vaoa" at the beginning of the 7th century. From the 9th century it belonged to the monastery Prieuré Saint-Vivant of the Order of Benedictine, In 1232, the monks were given vineyards. In 1651, the location "Le Cloux" was renamed "La Romanée" because of the discovery of Roman ruins nearby.
