Lambrusco Oliva

The red grape variety originates from Italy and is one of the many Lambrusco varieties. Synonyms are Lambrusco Mazzone, Lambrusco Olivia 9, Lambrusco Olivia 12 and Olivone. The parentage is unknown. The variety was first mentioned in 1886. The late-ripening, very productive vine has olive-shaped berries, from which the name is derived. It produces dark-coloured, slightly bitter red wines. These are used for the production of still and sparkling wines. The variety was only added to the official variety register in 2000. It is grown in the two provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia in the Emilia-Romagna region and is permitted in the Lambrusco and Rosso wines of the Reggiano DOC area. In 2016, 104 hectares of vines were designated in Italy (Kym Anderson).
