late vintage

vendange tardive, récolte tardive (F)
late harvest, late vintage (GB)
vendemmia tardiva (I)
cosecha tardía (ES)

In Germany and Austria valid name for a special one Prädikatswein (For exact terms, see the countries). Some legends about the "invention" of the late harvest are under Spätlesereiter and Trockenbeerenauslese described. Today one associates with such wines less the fact of a late harvest (which would be relatively difficult to control), but the only wine-law criterion is a minimum Mostgewicht (Sugar in Oechsle or KMW), which requires fully ripe and therefore sweet grapes. The appointment of vintage has no legal meaning (more), although of course it has influence (the later, the more mature). A late harvest is indeed common lovely but you can too dry get extended.

Complete listings of the numerous vinification measures and cellar techniques, as well as the various wine-regulated wine, sparkling wine and distillate types are under the keyword winemaking contain. Comprehensive information on wine law is available under the keyword wine law,
