Later-Veit

The estate is located in the municipality of Piesport (Bernkastel area) in the German wine-growing region Moselle, It has been family-owned for 350 years. It has been managed by Heinz Welter since 1988. His wife Silvia is the daughter of Theo Later and Maria Later, born Veit, who have developed the business, which grew out of an ancient Piesporter wine dynasty, into a more and more successful bottle wine marketing since 1958. An ostrich economy is connected. The vineyards cover seven hectares of vineyards in the Domherr, Falkenberg, Goldtröpfchen and Grafenberg (Piesport), as well Ohligsberg (Wintrich). They are mainly planted with Riesling (65%), as well as Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Noir. Depending on the characteristics of the grapes, the Rieslings are vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks or in classic wood powder with the most natural possible clarification and expansion method. The predicate system with Kabinett, Auslese, Spätlese etc. is maintained intensively, thus guaranteeing natural, unsweetened and non-concentrated wines. The red wines are fermented on the mash for two to three weeks, with some rapping (stems) being added to emphasize the tannins and additionally to break a superficial primary fruit. They are mostly aged for one and a half to almost two years in barriques, some of which are new but above all used, and bottled completely unfiltered.
