Producer description of "Tenuta Le Calcinaie"

The "Tenuta Le Calcinaie" is located in the municipality of San Gimignano (province of Siena) in the Italian region of Tuscany. The company is managed by Simone Santini, who says that he covers all functions "from vineyard work to cellar technology and marketing". The first vineyard of one hectare was planted in 1987 and the first wine was bottled six years later. The completely renovated wine cellar was put into operation in 2006. The vineyards cover 12 hectares of vineyards planted with the white wine varieties Chardonnay and Vernaccia di San Gimignano, and the red wine varieties Sangiovese, Canaiolo Nero, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard has been cultivated according to the rules of organic viticulture since 1995.

All work in the vineyard and cellar is carried out with total renunciation of chemicals. For the red wines, an intensive extraction is carried out to obtain powerful and colourful wines. Premium wines are the DOCG white wine Vernaccia di San Gimignano Riserva Vigna Ai Sassi (90% Vernaccia with 10% Chardonnay, 2 years yeast sedimentation in steel), the DOCG red wine Chianti-Classico Colli Senesi Riserva "Santa Maria" (Sangiovese with Canaiolo, 18 to 24 months in 25 hl wooden barrel) and the organic wine "Ingredienti-Uva" (100% Sangiovese, in steel). Every year, 70,000 bottles of wine are produced, which are exported to Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and England, as well as to the USA and Japan. The winery is a member of Consorzio Produttori Vernaccia.
