The white grape probably comes from Italy (or Spain ). Synonyms are Bernarda, Bernard, Bernardine, Blanc de la Salle, Blanc de Morgex, Blanc du Valdigne, Legiruela (Spain), Plant de la Salle and Prié Blanc. The exact origin lies in the Italian aosta Valley, where it was first mentioned in 1691. There used to be two varieties, one in the area of Valdigne (upper part of the Valle d'Aosta) and one in the meantime disappeared in the municipality of Valpelline. At the beginning of the 19th century, it probably reached the Swiss canton (as did some other varieties) via St. Bernard Wallis which is why she is called Bernard there.
