As Cru (top appellation) classified area in the northern section of the Rhone on the left bank, named after the mountain of the same name. Case by case are on the labels also the terms Ermitage, l'Ermitage or l'Hermitage. It is located in the southern part of the section on the left bank of the Rhône. North closes the area Crozes-Hermitage on. Already 400 v. Chr. Was here by the Phoenicians presumably grown wine. The Greek historian Strabo (63 BC-28 AD) reported that the banks of the Rhône were covered by vines and possibly meant exactly this area. The name Hermitage is derived from the hermitage of the crusader Henri Gaspard de Sterimberg, who retired from the year 1224 on the hill of Tain and founded a hermitage (Ermitage) to devote himself to prayer and viticulture.
