calibration wine (GB)

Designation (also calibration wine, standard wine) for a wine at one wine review, which determines the level at which the evaluation of all other wines to be tasted oriented. This is to avoid that reviews are too far apart, which may well occur even with experienced tasters. A level wine is served at the beginning of a professional tasting. The tasters agree together on a certain number of points as a benchmark or guideline for the evaluation of the following wines. The level wine is thus a help for the tasters to keep their own Kosterpegel and not to waver too much.
