Term created by British merchant houses in Portugal for the elongated warehouses in which Port and Malaga wines are finished, or stored and matured. The term derives from the Portuguese loja (storage room or shop), sometimes Armazém (Portuguese for warehouse) is also used. Many such lodges can be found, for example, in the Porto-Vila Nova de Gaia on the opposite bank of the river.

I have great respect for the scope and quality of the wein.plus encyclopaedia. It is a unique place to go for crisp, sound information on terms from the world of wine.
