Lodi

AVA area named after the city of the same name in the Californian region with areas in the two counties of Sacramento and San Joaquin. The success story of a famous Californian wine-growing family began in 1922 in Lodi, when Cesare (1883-1959) moved here with his wife and children and started a wholesale business in grapes. In the 19th century many German small farmers settled here. The low-lying vineyards cover 24,000 hectares of vines on nutrient-rich and fertile soil washed up by the rivers. The most common grape varieties are the red Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Ruby Cabernet and Merlot, and the white Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The winegrowers deliver their grapes mainly to huge wineries such as the two wine multinationals (Centerra) and for the production of simple mass wines. In the Lodi area is also the town of with the winery of the same name. Under this label, inexpensive wines are produced in large quantities - the . Other producers are Jeremy Wine, Oak Ridge, , St. Amant and Van Ruiten.
