The success story of a famous Californian wine-growing family began in Lodi in 1922 as Cesare Mondavi (1883-1959) moved here with his wife and children and established a wholesale business in grapes. In the 19th century, many small German farmers settled here. The low-lying vineyards cover 24,000 hectares of vineyards on nutrient-rich and fertile soils washed up by the rivers. The most common grape varieties are the red Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Ruby Cabernet and Merlot, as well as the white Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The winegrowers mainly supply their grapes to huge wineries such as the two wine multinationals Constellation Brands (Centerra) and Gallo for the production of simple bulk wines. The city is also in the Lodi area Woodbridge with the winery of the same name Mondavi, Inexpensive wines are produced in large quantities under this label - the Fighting variety shows, Other producers are Jeremy Wine, Oak Ridge, Ravenswood, St. Amant and Van Ruiten.
