Maiolica

The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Arazo, Balsamina Grossa, Corinto, Gaglioppa, Galoppa, Galsamina Nera, Grana, Maioppa, Malvasia, Ortonese, Primitivo di Viaggiano, Sanforte and Uva Nostrale. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2021, it comes from a presumably natural cross between unknown parent variety x Visparola. It is often confused with the Gaglioppo variety due to seemingly indicative synonyms and morphological similarities. The very late-maturing vine is sensitive to winter frost. It produces colourful, spicy red wines with soft tannins, which are mainly used as blends. The variety used to be widespread in the Abruzzo region. Today, it is cultivated there in small quantities in the provinces of Chieti and Pescara, as well as in the province of Macerata in the Marche region. In 2016, 13 hectares were reported with a decreasing trend (Kym Anderson statistics).
