Malbo Gentile

The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Amabile, Amabile di Genova, Malbo, Tubino and Turbino. Despite seemingly suggestive synonyms, it must not be confused with the variety Foglia Tonda. The parentage is unknown, but a DNA analysis carried out in 2005 revealed a genetic relationship with the Fortana variety. According to an unverifiable hypothesis, it was brought from California at the end of the 19th century under the name Tubino. The early to medium ripening, high-yielding vine is susceptible to both powdery mildews but resistant to botrytis. It is cultivated in the Emilia-Romagna region, especially in the two provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia. There it is permitted in the DOC wines Colli di Scandiano e di Canossa, Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro and Reggiano, among others. In 2016, 219 hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson statistics).
