Malvasia Bianca di Basilicata

The white grape variety comes from Italy. It is one of the numerous varieties with the name part Malvasia. It is morphologically very different from Malvasia Bianca Lunga, but quite similar to Malvasia Bianca di Candia. The medium to late ripening, high-yielding vine produces aromatic, acidic white wines, which are mainly used as blends. These are used for the production of sweet to dry still wines as well as sparkling wines. The variety is cultivated exclusively in the Basilicata region, where the population has dwindled considerably. There, it is permitted in the DOC wines Grottino di Roccanova and Matera. In 2016, only 32 hectares of vines were reported, with a strong downward trend; in 2000, it was still around 900 hectares (Kym Anderson statistics).
