Mamertinum

One of Pliny the Elder (23-79 AD) mentioned sweet wine from Messina Sicily who is said to have been greatly valued by Julius Caesar (100-44 BC). The Mamertines were an ancient people who considered themselves to be descendants of the god Mars. The small town of Galati Mamertino is located west of Messina in the province of the same name.
