Mandelstein

single vineyard in the municipality of Boppard in the German wine-growing region of the Middle Rhine. The name is probably due to the original growth of pine trees on the mountain (mhd. Mandel = pine). It is part of the Bopparder Hamm vineyard, which is also a district of Boppard with the same name. To the east of it is the single vineyard Feuerlay, above it the single vineyard Weingrube. The foot of the slope is only 50 to 80 metres from the Rhine, which has a very positive effect. The south to south-southeast facing vineyards are situated at 70 to 170 metres above sea level on greenish clay-slate weathered soil and cover 13 hectares of vineyards. With a slope of up to 70% (35°), the site is one of the steepest vineyards in Germany and Europe. The Riesling variety is cultivated here in particular. The Didinger, Heilig Grab, Königshof, Müller Matthias and Perll August wineries, for example, have shares in the site.
