Mandón

The red grape variety originates from Spain. Synonyms are Barillol, Galmeta, Galmete, Garró, Mandó, Morenillo and Valenciana Tinta. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2012, it is probably a natural cross between Hebén x Graciano. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see Molecular Genetics). It was a parent of the Castellana Blanca variety. The variety, which is threatened with extinction, is cultivated in Catalonia (partly under the names Garró), where it is permitted in the DO red wine Terra Alta. In 2016, only one stand with 0.5 hectares was designated (Kym Anderson).
