Manto Negro

The red grape variety comes from the island of Mallorca, the main island of the Balearic Islands.(Spain). Synonyms are Cabelis, Cabellis, Mantonegro, Mantos Negro, Mantuo Negro, Moll and Prensal. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it comes from a presumably natural cross between Sabaté x Callet Cas Concos Negro (Callet Negrella) or the white-berry mutant Callet Cas Concos Blanco. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics). The medium to late ripening vine is relatively resistant to both types of mildew, but susceptible to botrytis. It yields light red, high-alcohol red wines with fruity aromas. The variety is mainly cultivated on the largest Balearic island, Majorca, where it is permitted in the DO areas of Binissalem and Plà i Llevant. There, it is mostly blended with the Callet variety. In 2016, 311 hectares of vines were declared (Kym Anderson statistics).
