Mantonico Bianco

The white grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Mantonacu, Mantonacu Viru, Mantonacu Viru della Locride, Mantonica Vera, Mantonico di Bianco, Mantonico Maclucnese, Mantonico Pizzutella, Mantonico Vero, Mantonicu Pizzutella, Mantonicu Vera and Uva della Scala. It should not be confused with the varieties Guardavalle (with synonym Mantonico) or Montonico Bianco (with confusing synonym Mantonico Bianco Italico). According to DNA analyses, Mantonico Bianco is a parent of the varieties Catarratto Bianco Comune, Gaglioppo and Nerello Mascalese. There is no connection to the Castiglione variety with the synonym Mantonico Nero. The variety was first mentioned as early as 1601. The very late ripening vine has good resistance to fungal diseases. It produces flowery white wines with aromas of herbs. The variety is cultivated in the Calabria region along the Ionian coast and is permitted there in the DOC wines Bivongi, Lamezia, Savuto and Terre di Cosenza. However, it is not clear whether it is actually Mantonico Bianco or perhaps Montonico Bianco. In 2016, only stocks forMontonicoBianco were reported (Kym Anderson statistics).
