Maria

The Holy Virgin Mary is the patron saint of the Catholic Church and of all Catholic Christendom, as well as of Bavaria and Lausanne, of innkeepers, cooks, furriers, clothiers, potters, boatmen, gingerbread bakers, silk workers and vinegar brewers. They help against thunderstorms and lightning and in all hardships. Many centuries ago, she was chosen as "Our Lady" to be the most sought-after patron saint of the winegrowers on the Rhine in the German winegrowing regions of the Middle Rhine, Rheingau and Rheinhessen and was venerated as the Grape Madonna. There she stands at the head of all wine saints and enjoys the special trust of the winegrowers. In addition to the main commemoration day of 1 January, she has over 20 other days of honour spread over the whole year and every month. The picture shows the catholic pilgrimage church "Maria im Weingarten" (GL Kirchberg) in late gothic architectural style, situated in the middle of the vineyards above the franconian wine-growing community of Volkach on the Mainschleife.
