Maryland

The federal state with the capital Annapolis on the middle Atlantic east coast was one of the 13 founding states of the USA. In the 1940s, the American viticultural pioneer Philip Wagner (1904-1996) introduced large quantities of grafting rootstocks and French hybrids from France at his Boordy Vineyards, which still exists today, from the Baco, Seibel and Seyve-Villard vine nurseries. Many states then followed his example. The three areas classified as AVA are Catoctin, Cumberland Valley and Linganore. Most of the hybrids are still cultivated today, but European varieties have been added. Eleven farms produce wine on only about 150 hectares of vineyards. The hinterland of the largest city of Baltimore is the most important wine-growing area. Well-known wineries are Boordy Vineyards (traditionally mainly hybrid wines), Basignani (Chardonnay, Seyval Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon), Boordy Vineyards (Seyval Blanc, sparkling wines), Elk Run Vineyards, Fiore Winery (Chambourcin) and Woodhall Vineyards & Wine Cellars (Seyval Blanc, CS). In Baltimore is the grave of the famous writer Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), who became famous in connection with the mysterious "Poe Toaster".
