The company "Albert Mathier & Söhne" is located in the municipality of Salquenen (Salgesch) in the Swiss canton of Valais. It was founded in 1928 by Albert Mathier. Today, the company is run by Amédée Mathier, the third generation. The company's own vineyards cover 30 hectares with over 300,000 vines. They are planted with the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah, St. Laurent, Cabernet Franc and Cornalin, as well as the white wine varieties Pinot Blanc, Petite Arvine (Arvine), Ermitage (Marsanne), Heida (Savagnin Blanc = Traminer), Johannisberg (Silvaner) and Muscat (Muscat Blanc). Depending on the type of wine, the wines are matured in stainless steel, wooden barrels, barrique or amphora. The product range includes the Amphore, Rhoneblut (from Pinot Noir), Domaine de Ravoire (from special vineyards), Vinum Lignum (aged in barrique) and Valais specialities lines. The latter include Dôle, Flétri and Strohwein (sweet wines made from dried grapes), as well as Oeil de perdrix (rosé wine). On part of the land in the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park, certified organic viticulture is practised according to the rules of Bio Suisse. The wines from there are Forestier and Parkwein. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines and noble brandies (Marc de Lie = yeast, Marc de Dôle = marc, Tschatscha Eau de Lie d'Amphore = marc) are also produced.

A speciality of the house are amphora wines (Orange Wine), which are produced according to the Georgian model by means of the traditional Kachetic process in clay jugs (Kvevris). Since the 2009 vintage, kvevris of various sizes ranging from 400 litres to 2,500 litres have been used. 6 Kvevris are located in Marani (Georgian wine cellar) built in the vineyard, then in 2014 a second Marani was completed inside the winery with 11 more Kvevris. The grapes go into the kvevris directly after harvest and ferment there for between seven to nine months. The turbid matter slowly sinks until the wine is clarified. After that, the wine is transferred to other containers and acquires its clarity without filtration. Only after two years of ageing is the wine bottled. Amphore® is a registered trademark.
