Medardus

The bishop and deacon was born as the son of a Frankish nobleman around 475 in Salency (northern France) and died around 560 in Noyon. In 530 he became bishop of Vermond in Picardy and in 532 also bishop of Tournai. The name means "The Mighty Strong One", his day of remembrance is 8 June. He is the patron saint of farmers, winegrowers and brewers; he ensures dry hay weather and a good harvest. Calendar sayings: 1) St. Medard no longer brings frost that would be dangerous for the vine. 2) If it rains on St. Medard's day, it rains 21 days. See also under Farming Rules and Wine Saints.
