Medardus

The bishop and deacon was born the son of a Franconian nobleman around 475 in Salency (northern France) and died around 560 in Noyon. In 530 he became Bishop of Vermond in Picardy and 532 also Bishop of Tournai. The name means "The mighty strong one", his feast day is June 8th. He is the patron saint of farmers, winegrowers and brewers; it ensures dry hay weather and a good harvest. Calendar sayings: 1) St. Medard no longer brings frost that would be dangerous to the vine. 2) If it's raining on Medardus Day, it's raining 21 days . See also under Bauernregeln and wine Saints,
