Meerlust Estate

The winery is one of the most famous and oldest in South Africa and is located in the Stellenbosch wine district. It was founded in 1693 by the German Henning Huising after land was assigned to him by Governor Simon van der Stel (1639-1712). He called it "Meerlust" and it was he who built the Cape Dutch style house that still exists today. In 1757 the estate was purchased by Johannes Albertus Myburgh and has been owned by this family for eight generations. The current owner is Hannes Myburgh, his cellar master Giorgio Dalla Cia is the only Italian winemaker in the Cape. The vineyards cover 160 hectares. They are planted with the varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. The flagship is the Bordeaux-style red wine "Rubicon", aged in French barriques (65% CS, 25% Merlot, 15% CF). However, it should not be confused with the "Rubicon" from the Californian winery Inglenook Winery (formerly Rubicon Estate Winery). A "Meerlust Grappa"(grape marc spirit) is also distilled from different varieties. The most recent creation is the "Dalla Cia" line, which markets wines made from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc to be drunk young. Around half a million bottles of wine are produced annually.

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
