Melchior

Oversize bottles with the volume of 18 liters or the content of 24 normal bottles. This giant size was previously used in Bordeaux, Tuscany and South Africa for still wines. The name derives from one of the Three Magi (besides Balthasar and Kaspar) or "Wise Men from the East" of the New Testament in the Bible from the newly born Jesus in the stable of Bethlehem with gold, incense and myrrh gifted. The same bottle size, but with the label Goliath (after the biblical giant) is for champagne used. See also under bottles and wine vessels,
