The Greek winery "Mercouri Estate" with headquarters near the city of Olympia in the west of the island Peloponnese was founded in 1860 by Theodore Mercouri from Alexandria (Egypt). In 1870, he imported the Italian variety Refosco from Friuli, planting his first vineyard. Wine was then exported in barrels to Trieste. But it was also (still today) olive oil and currants (raisins) produced. The son of founder Leonidas Mercouri built this area in the 1930s, the first modern winery and managed the estate until the year 1955. From then, although grapes were produced, but no own wine produced. In 1990, a reactivation by the brothers Vassilis and Christos Kanellakopoulos, the Mercouri descendants in the fourth generation are. They introduced a new Refosco clone, traditionally referred to as the vine here Mercouri. It is much experimented with autochthonous and foreign grape varieties.

The vineyards are planted with the red varieties Avgoustiatis, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache Noir, Mavrodaphne, Merlot, Mourvèdre, Refosco, Sangiovese and Syrah, as well as the white varieties Malvasia Aromatica, Ribolla Gialla, Roditis, Sauvignon Blanc, Tourkopoula and Viognier. The flagships are the red wine Ktima Mercouri from the varieties Refosco (85%) and Mavrodaphne (15%), and the white wine Foloi from the variety Roditis. A specialty is the small-scale produced Hortes, which is made from dried Mavrodaphne and Korinthiaki grapes, matured in oak barrels for five years and blended to 18% alcohol content. Furthermore, the red wine Antaris (Avgoustiatis, Mourvèdre) of the Rosé Orion (Grenache Noir), as well as the white wines Kallisto (Tourkopoula, Ribolla Giala) and Coma Berenices (Viognier) are produced.
