The Greek winery "Mercouri Estate" with headquarters near the city of Olympia in the west of the island Peloponnese was founded in 1860 by Theodore Mercouri from Alexandria (Egypt). In 1870, he became the Italian variety Refosco from Friuli and planted his first vineyard with it. Wine was then exported to Trieste in barrels. But olive oil and currants (raisins) were also produced (still today). The son of the founder Leonidas Mercouri built the first modern winery in this area in the 1930s and ran the estate until 1955. From then on, grapes were produced, but no more wine was produced. In 1990, the brothers Vassilis and Christos Kanellakopoulos reactivated, who are fourth generation Mercouri descendants. They introduced a new Refosco clone, with the vine traditionally referred to here as Mercouri. There is a lot of experimentation with indigenous and foreign grape varieties.

The vineyards include the red varieties Avgoustiatis, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache Noir, Mavrodaphne, Merlot, Mourvèdre, Refosco, Sangiovese and Syrah, as well as the white varieties Malvasia Aromatica, Ribolla Gialla, Roditis, Sauvignon Blanc, Tourkopoult and Viogn. The flagships are the red wine Ktima Mercouri from the varieties Refosco (85%) and Mavrodaphne (15%), and the white wine Foloi from the variety Roditis. A specialty is the Hortes, which is only produced in small quantities, which is made from dried Mavrodaphne and Korinthiaki grapes, matured in oak barrels for five years and is refined to 18% alcohol. Furthermore, the red wine Antaris (Avgoustiatis, Mourvèdre) the Rosé Orion (Grenache Noir), as well as the white wines Kallisto (Tourkopoula, Ribolla Giala) and Coma Berenices (Viognier) are produced.
