Merlaut Jacques

The French wine merchant Jacques Merlaut (+2008) built up a trading empire in Bordeaux and was considered the grey eminence of the Bordeaux wine trade during his lifetime. The extended Merlaut-Villars family is also the main shareholder of the company "Bernard Taillan France SA", which is engaged in the wholesale of alcoholic beverages. The company owns the Bordeaux vineyards Château Chasse-Spleen, Château Citran, Château de Camensac, Château Gruaud-Larose, Château Ferrière, Château La Gurgue and Château Haut-Bages-Libéral. Jacques' daughter Bernadette Villars studied oenology with Professor Émile Peynaud (1912-2004) and collaborated with him in the reactivation of Château Chasse-Spleen. When Bernadette and her husband died in 1992 in a tragic accident during a hiking holiday in the Pyrenees, their daughter Claire Villars-Lurton (wife of Gonzague Lurton) took over. Today she manages all the family's activities. Other members working in the company are Jacques' son Jean Merlaut and niece Céline Villars-Foubet.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
