The "Weingut & Brennerei Johann Peter Mertes" is located in the municipality of Kanzem (Saar area) in the German wine-growing region of Mosel. The winery was founded in 1891 and is now run by Johann Peter Mertes, the fifth generation of the family to do so. The vineyards cover 12.5 hectares of vines in the single vineyard sites Altenberg and Sonnenberg (Kanzem), Bockstein (Ockfen), Goldberg and Ritterpfad (Wawern), and Kupp and Stirn (Saarburg). Only the two varieties Riesling and Blauer Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) are cultivated. Maintaining the health of the soils is of great importance. Special attention is paid to supplying the vines with natural nutrients by spreading lime marl. The grapes are hand-picked selectively as late as possible in the vineyards and gently pressed. The variety, the character of the site and the vintage are brought out through as little intervention as possible. In years with suitable weather conditions, ice wines are also produced. In the farm's own distillery, barrel-aged brandies(yeast, pomace, apple, Mirabell, Williams, plum) are produced. Bottle-fermented sparkling wines are also produced. The winery is a member of Pro Riesling.
