Mertes Johann Peter

The "Weingut & Brennerei Johann Peter Mertes" is located in the municipality of Kanzem (Saar area) in the German wine-growing region Moselle, The company was founded in 1891 and is now managed by Johann Peter Mertes in the fifth generation of the family. The vineyards cover 12.5 hectares of vineyards in the individual layers Altenberg and Sonnenberg (Kanzem), Bockstein (Ockfen), Goldberg and Ritterpfad (Wawern), as well Kupp and forehead (Saarburg). Only the two varieties Riesling Blue Pinot Noir are cultivated. The health of the soil has a high priority. Particular attention is paid to the supply of natural nutrients to the vine, for example by spreading lime marl. The grapes are picked as selectively as possible in the vineyards by hand and gently pressed. By as few as possible interventions, the grape variety, the character of the situation and the vintage should come into its own. In weather-appropriate years and ice wines are pressed. In the company's own distillery, matured brandies (yeast, pomace, apple, mirabell, Williams, plum) are produced in barrels made of oak and mulberry wood. Bottle-fermented sects are also created. The winery is a member of Pro Riesling,
