Mertes Johann Peter

The "Weingut & Brennerei Johann Peter Mertes" is located in the municipality of Kanzem (Saar area) in the German wine-growing region Moselle, The company was founded in 1891 and is now managed by the fifth generation of the family, Johann Peter Mertes. The vineyards cover 12.5 hectares of vineyards in the individual layers Altenberg and Sonnenberg (Kanzem), Bockstein (Ockfen), Goldberg and Ritterpfad (Wawern), as well Kupp and forehead (Saarburg). Only the two varieties of Riesling Blauer Spätburgunder are cultivated. Maintaining the health of the floors is very important. Particular attention is paid to supplying the vines with natural nutrients, for example by spreading lime marl. The grapes are selected by hand in the vineyards as late as possible and carefully pressed. With as little intervention as possible, the grape variety, the character of the location and the vintage should come into play. If the weather is suitable, ice wines are also pressed. In the company's own distillery, fine brandies (yeast, pomace, apple, mirabell, Williams, plum) are matured in oak and mulberry wood barrels. Bottle-fermented sect are also produced. The winery is a member of Per Riesling,
