Metcalfe Charles

The English wine expert Charles Metcalfe (*1949) founded Wine International magazine with Robert Joseph in 1984, which was later renamed Wine & Spirit International. He also initiated the two competitions International Wine Challenge and International Spirit Challenge, which he organised annually. He sold the journal and competitions to the newspaper publisher William Reed in 2006. Metcalfe regularly appears on various TV programmes on the subject of wine and food. He is considered a specialist in Spanish and Portuguese wines and a profound wine critic. According to his own statement, he often tastes up to 100 wines a day. Together with his wife Kathryn McWhirter, he wrote the books "The Wine & Food Lover's Guide to Portugal" and "The Wines of Spain & Portugal". For the latter he won the "Glenfiddich Drinks Book of the Year Award" in 1989. He is Honorary President of the Association of Wine Educators and Chairman of the panel of judges for the Louis Roederer International Wine Writers' Award. He also acts as a consultant for restaurant wine lists.
