Millot-Foch

The red grape variety is an interspecific new variety between Léon Millot x Maréchal Foch. Synonyms are Blattner 85-1, Valentin Blattner 85-1 and VB 85-1, with genes from Vitis riparia, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera. The crossing of the hybrids was done by the breeder and vineyard owner Valentin Blattner in Soyhières, Switzerland. The early-ripening frost-hardy vine is generally resistant to various fungal diseases, which is why it is considered a PIWI variety. It produces dark red wines with soft tannins and a wide range of aromas of wild berries, cherries and pepper. The variety is grown on 124 hectares in Canada and 2 hectares in Switzerland in the cantons of Jura and Zug. In 2016, a total of 126 hectares of vineyard area were designated (Kym Anderson statistics).
