Minimal Pruned Cordon Trained

This training system (also called MPCT, Minimal Pruning, Non-pruning-system) was developed at the CSIRO research institute in Australia in the 1990s. The extensive system is used with the aim of reducing the amount of work as much as possible. It is also used for trellising. All work in the vineyard is done almost exclusively by machine. Manual work is only necessary in exceptional cases. After cane establishment and cone pruning, in the yield years, pruning is only done mechanically in the cordon direction back to short shoots.

This system results in a completely different canopy structure and bunch zone; the shoots are located on the outer part of the large foliage wall. Although the high numbers of eyes result in a significantly lower sprouting rate, the number of shoots is still greater. The growth of the shoots is clearly reduced, the grapes are looser and smaller, the berries have a smaller diameter. There is not yet much experience available. Advantages are, apart from the greatly reduced effort regarding foliage care, the lower susceptibility to botrytis and downy mildew as well as a rapid leaf area development, disadvantages are a stronger tendency to water stress and trickling as well as very many small grapes.

After the changeover in the first year with high yields, a balance between shoot development and root mass is established in the following years. The vine regulates itself, so to speak, which corresponds to the natural development of the vine. The grape harvest can only be done with a grape harvester. The system is not suitable for all grape varieties. Very good for Bacchus, Dornfelder, Müller-Thurgau, Kerner, Riesling and Scheurebe. Only conditionally for Blaufränkisch, Blauer Portugieser, Grüner Veltliner, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Traminer and Zweigelt. See complete lists of thematically related keywords at vine training (systems) as well as vineyard care (measures and activities).

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
