Name (also 144 clone, GV 144) for a specially bred clone of the grape variety Grüner Veltliner, which was selected and propagated by the Mössmer family in Retz(Lower Austria) in the 1960s. It is characterised by its high robustness, high yield and intense, striking fruit aromas. The latter are particularly reminiscent of Sämling 88 or Scheurebe (hence Sämlingston), but Müller-Thurgau or Sauvignon Blanc are also mentioned in connection with wine ratings. This "loud" flavour and the lack of varietal typicity has led to this clone enjoying a rather poor reputation among Grüner Veltliner purists. We can only speculate about its distribution, as the clone is not listed separately in the statistics. However, there are probably only small populations.
The wein.plus encyclopaedia is a comprehensive, well-researched reference work. Available anytime and anywhere, it has become an indispensable part of teaching, used by students and myself alike. Highly recommended!
