Today's Mongolia, the home of Genghis Khan (1162-1227), was as "Outer Mongolia" a part of China until 1921, when it became independent. There is no viticulture, but there are wild vines. Among the most popular alcoholic beverages are rice wine and the wine-like airak (airag), a fermented mare's milk with a low alcohol content of about 5% vol. The red grape variety Saperavi Severny was bred in Russia from a variety of the species Vitis amurensis originating from here.
