The red grape variety (also Negrodolce) originates from Italy. It must not be confused with Sangiovese (Morellino) or Morellino del Casentino, despite the fact that it seems to have synonyms or morphological or name-similarities. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2008, there is a parent-offspring relationship between Morellino del Valdarno and Sangiovese (see Sangiovese). Morellino del Valdarno used to be cultivated in Tuscany, but is no longer important today. In 2016 no stocks were recorded (Kym Anderson).
Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
