Morey-Saint-Denis

Commune in the Côte de Nuits area which, like so many in Burgundy, added the name of the best location in the 19th century. In the meantime, however, Clos Saint-Denis is no longer considered the best. The vineyards cover 100 hectares. Under the Village appellation of the same name, red wines are made from Pinot Noir with shares of Pinot Gris and Pinot Liébault. The white wines are produced from Chardonnay.

The five Grand Cru sites cover over 40 hectares of vineyards. These are Bonnes-Mares, Clos de la Roche, Clos de Tart, Clos des Lambrays and Clos Saint-Denis. The 20 Premiers Crus comprise 44 hectares of vineyards. These are Aux Charmes, Aux Cheseaux, Clos Baulet, Clos des Ormes, Clos Sorbè, Côte Rôtie, La Bussière, La Riotte, Les Blanchards, Les Chaffots, Les Charrières, Les Chenevery, Les Faconnières, Les Genavrières, Les Gruenchers, Les Milandes, Les Ruchots, Les Sorbes, Le Village and Monts Luisants.

On the Friday before the annual auction "Hosipces de Nuits" in the third week of March, the winegrowers present their wines at a "Dionysos stand" in the municipal festival hall. The occasion is a charitable purpose similar to the famous Hospices de Beaune. Well-known producers with Grand Cru and/or Premier Cru sites are Amiot, Bichot (Domaine du Clos Frantin), Charlopin, Chézeaux, Dujac, Jadot, Domaine Leroy, Lignier, Mommessin (Domaine des Lambrays), Perrot-Minot, Ponsot, Roumir, Rousseau and Serveau.
