One of the ten cru sites of the Beaujolais around the village of Villié-Morgon, which gives the village its name. The vineyards cover 1,115 hectares and are situated at an average altitude of 450 metres above sea level on basaltic rocks and slate in the east and sandy or siliceous soils in the north and west. They are divided into six climats, whose names may appear on the label. The powerful red wines (especially Côte de Py) from the Gamay variety are among the most long-lasting, which only develop after four to six years. This has also become a synonym, because "Morgonnising" means that they are very similar to a Côte d'Or wine dominated by Pinot Noir. Together with those of Crus Chénas and Moulin-à-Vent, they are considered the best of Beaujolais (Vins de garde). Well known producers are Louis-Claude Desvignes, Jean Foillard, M. Lapierre, Château de Pizay, Domaine Aucoeur, Domaine Dominique Piron, Domaine Jean Descombes and Domaine de la Roche Pillée.

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
