Morstein

single vineyard in the municipality of Westhofen (Wonnegau area) in the German wine-growing region of Rheinhessen. It was mentioned as early as 1282 in a deed of donation to the Cistercian monastery of Otterberg in the Palatinate as "Marstene". The name is not derived from "Moor" but from "Marstein", which probably refers to a marker (boundary stone). The south-facing vineyards at an altitude of 140 to 280 metres above sea level with a slope gradient of up to 20% cover 144 hectares of vineyards stretching between the municipalities of Gundersheim and Westhofen. Only about 50 hectares in the middle slope of this huge site are considered privileged. The clay marl soil with limestone inlays in the upper layer consists of massive, water-bearing limestone rocks in the subsoil. The upper layer consists of heavy clay marl with limestone inlays. Here, the varieties Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Dornfelder and Pinot Noir are cultivated. The wineries Bernhard-Räder, Dreissigacker, Geil - Römerhof, Groebe Friedrich, Gutzler Gerhard, Hirschhof, Keller Klaus, Knobloch Klaus, Seehof Ernst Fauth, Wechsler Katharina, Winter Stefan and Wittmann Philipp, for example, have shares.
