The red grape variety originates from Greece. Synonyms are Mavromoschato, Moschato Mavro, Moschogaltso, Muscat Mavro and Xinogaltso. It should not be confused with the Muscat d'Hamburg variety due to morphological similarities. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2020, it is a presumably natural cross between Muscat Blanc x unknown partner. The late-maturing vine is susceptible to botrytis and grape rot, but resistant to drought. It produces aromatic, alcohol-rich red wines. It is cultivated in Greece, mainly in the region of Macedonia. In 2016, 113 hectares of vines were reported (Kym Anderson statistics).
