French name for an old liquid and dry hollow measure. The name is derived from the Latin "modius" or "modus" (unit of measurement, rule), which was a Roman grain measure of 10.5 litres and corresponds to the biblical bushel. However, the volumes varied greatly from country to country. Muid is also a type of barrel with a volume of 1,300 litres in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region. A demi-muid (half-size) is common in Champagne and Languedoc-Roussillon. A muid is sometimes equated with a poinçon or described as one of the possible barrique barrel types.
