Muri-Gries

The "Muri-Gries winery / monastery cellar" is located in Gries near Bozen in the Italian wine-growing sector South-Tirol (Region Trentino-Alto Adige ). The origin of today's monastery dates back to 1845 Benedictine monks from the Swiss Muri in the canton of Aargau took over the Augustinian canons in Gries, which had already been closed at that time. In addition to the Muri-Gries winery, the monastery also operates orchards, a mountain farm in Kampidell near San Genesio and a monastery garden. For a long time, the self-made wine was mainly used for the monastery. As managing director and oenologist Christian Werth is responsible.

Muri-Gries - monastery complex and winery with vineyards

From the beginning of the 1960s, wine was also bottled for the first time. The vineyards cover 35 hectares of vines in their own possession, from a further 20 hectares grapes are delivered by contractually bound farmers. The centerpiece is the monastery cloister, surrounded by old stone walls, which was included in the Austro-Hungarian cadastre in 1901. The floors consist of material washed up by the Talfer river on a Bozen quartz porphyry surface.

The red wine varieties are 80% Lagrein, Pinot Noir ( Pinot Noir ) Rosenmuskateller, Vernatsch ( Schiava Grossa ) and Grauvernatsch ( Schiava Grigia ), as well as 20% white wine Pinot Blanc ( Pinot Blanc ) Pinot gris. Chardonnay. Gewurztraminer. Sylvaner and Sauvignon ( Sauvignon Blanc ) cultivated and processed. The Lagrein variety, which is the most important with 80%, is particularly well cared for. Only biotypes from our own selection are used for new plantings in Lagrein plants. The cultivation takes place according to methods of a natural, integrated viticulture with low stick load and gentle interventions on plant growth and environment.

The wines are in the two lines Muri-Gries and Muri Abbey as DOC South Tyrol. Kalterersee. St. Magdalener and Terlaner Pinot Blanc produced. They are fermented in steel tanks and, depending on the type of wine, expanded in stainless steel, in large wooden barrels or in barriques. Premium wines include Lagrein Riserva Muri Abbey, Kalterersee Auslese Classico (Vernatsch) and Terlaner Pinot Blanc Riserva. All wines can be tasted and purchased in the monastery vinotheque. The winery is a member of the "Weingut Südtirols" association.
