The appellation is located in the south-east of the French wine-growing region Languedoc on the Mediterranean coast. To the west is the AOC Muscat de Frontignan and a little further northeast is the AOC Muscat de Lunel (both with similar wines). The white sweet wine was classified as AOC in 1959. It belongs to the second quality category "Grands Vins du Languedoc". The vineyards cover 290 hectares of vines on clay soils with a high iron oxide content and a reddish colour, interspersed with limestone. They are located on the slopes of the Montagne de la Gardiole, in two communes, Mireval and Vic-la-Gardiole, in the department of Hérault. It is one of the four vin doux naturel in Languedoc. It is made from 100% pure Muscat Blanc. Well known producers are CV Rabelais, Cave le Placard à Pinard and Domaine Mas Jacquet.
