The appellation is located in the west of the French wine region Languedoc. It is an enclave in the east of the AOC Minervois. The white sweet wine was classified as AOC in 1949. It belongs to the second quality category "Grands Vins du Languedoc". The vineyards cover 200 hectares of vineyards on calcareous clay soils at an altitude of 250 to 280 metres above sea level. They extend at the foot of the Montagne Noire around the eponymous commune of Saint-Jean de Minervois in the department of Hérault. It is one of the four vin doux naturel in Languedoc. The wine is made from 100% pure Muscat Blanc. Well-known producers are Domaine de Barroubio and the local winegrowers' cooperative Les Vignerons De Saint Jean De Minervois.
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
