The originally protected PDO area is located in the Kakheti region in eastern Georgia. It extends at an altitude of 400 to 500 metres above sea level on the left bank of the Alazani River in the municipalities of Artana, Jughaani, Laliskuri, Napareuli, Pshaveli and Saniore. The ruby red, dry red wine is made from Saperavi and/or Saperavi Budeshuri. It has a terroir-typical, velvety floral aroma of cherries. The straw-yellow, dry white wine is blended from Rkatsiteli and up to a maximum of 15% Mtsvane Kakhuri. It is characterised by a fruity aroma typical of the terroir.
