Negoska

The red grape variety originates from Greece. Synonyms are Goumenissas Mavro, Mavro Goumenissas, Neghotska, Negkoska, Negoska Popolka, Negotska Popolka, Popolka Naoussis and Popolki Naoussis. The name possibly derives from the Macedonian area/city of Naoussa, from where exactly it is said to originate. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2007, the long-suspected close relationship to the Xinomavro variety has not been confirmed. The parentage is unknown. The late-maturing, high-yielding vine is generally well resistant to various vine diseases. It yields a fruity, high-alcohol but rather low-acid red wine and is also used as table grape. The variety is mainly cultivated in the region of Macedonia, where it is often blended with the variety Xinomavro. It is approved there in the OPAP red wine Goumenissa. In 2016, a total of 17 hectares of vines with extremely decreasing terndency were reported in Greece; in 2010, the figure was 143 hectares (Kym Anderson statistics).
