The red grape variety originates from France. The name is derived from the colour name (black) and the commune of Banhars. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2013, it comes from a presumably natural crossing between Fer x Manseng Noir. However, this is based on only 20 DNA markers (see molecular genetics for more information). The medium ripening vine is susceptible to Botrytis and black spot disease (Phomopsis). It yields deep-dark, low-acid, low-alcohol red wines that are permitted in Vins d'Estaing. From the Carmarans vineyard in the commune of Campouriez in the Aveyron department (southwest France), 2,500 vines are cultivated. No stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson).
