Chemical substances for the specific control of nematodes (threadworms) and other soil pests. They belong to the large group of pesticides. The name is derived from "nematoda" and "caedere" (to kill). The most common nematicides consist of organic phosphorous compounds or special hydrocarbons. They have to be well distributed in the soil, therefore water-soluble agents are used or they are introduced into the soil in the form of a fumigation. Nematicides are also partly effective as insecticides (insects) and fungicides (fungi). Nematicides are no longer permitted in viticulture.
