Neuchâtel

Canton with capital of the same name in the French-speaking part of Switzerland near the border with France. The viticulture is documented from the year 998. The winegrowing area belongs to the so-called Three Lakes Region (see there). The vineyards cover 605 hectares of vines, mostly on Lâc de Neuchâtel (Lake Neuchâtel), as well as Lac de Bienne (Lake Biel) with a small part of the north-western shore in the canton of Neuchâtel and most of it in the canton of Bern. They lie in a 40 kilometre long band between the two municipalities of Le Landeron and Vaumarcus on mostly calcareous soil on southern slopes on the foothills of the Jura.

In 1993, an AOC statute was adopted and the wine-growing communes with this status are Auvernier, Bevaix, Boudry, Corcelles-Cormondrèche, Cornaux, Cortaillod, Cressier, Fresens, Gorgier, Hauterive, Le Landeron, Neuchâtel (with suburbs), Peseux, Saint-Aubin-Sauges, Saint-Blaise and Vaumarcus. The white wine varieties are mainly Chasselas, as well as Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris Müller-Thurgau (here Riesling-Sylvaner) and Sauvignon Blanc. The red wine varieties are Pinot Noir, Gamaret and Garanoir. A speciality is the salmon-coloured Rosé Oeil de perdrix, which is also available in white as Blanche. The Neuchâtel Blanc is a sparkling white wine from Chasselas (also "Sternliwein"), which is also produced with yeast sedimentation (French: sur lie). Well-known producers are Château d'Auvernier, Festiguet, Domaine Grisoni, Montmollin, Mauler and Ruedin.

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
