The winery "Sine qua non" is located in Oak View (Ventura County, Central Coast) south of Santa Barbara in California. The name means "absolutely indispensable". It was founded in 1994 by Austrian Manfred Krankl, who emigrated to the USA in 1980, and his wife Elaine. Until 2001, Krankl ran the bakery "La Brea Bakery" in Los Angeles and was a partner in the gourmet temple "Campanile".
